PROCESS
I start on cheap paper (usually 20lb printer paper) or from a sketchbook and begin with a rough sketch of a character with a few large shapes and general ideas. Sometimes I leave the sketch very simple or work through the sketch adding lots of details. But, I usually try not to spend too much time on the sketch because the rest of that work can be done in the inking stage.
I use a portable light table to keep the sketch and if I make too many mistakes I can start over pretty easily. I begin inking with the 0.25MM and the 0.3MM sized pen. Only outlining the most important information and details that I need from the sketch. After hours of fine details, I take the final drawing and scan it at a high resolution.
In Clip Studio Paint, I adjust the brightness, contrast, levels, and take out any mistakes I couldn’t get rid of with white out. After preparing the image, I decide on a color pallet, block out the main colors, figure out a background, adjust colors, experiment, and add more details until it is finished!
